Howard Rollins, HIV: Ragtime Star’s Life, Career and AIDS Diagnosis

A Tortured Soul

Anne-Marie Johnson, who played Howard Rollins's wife on In the Heat of the Night, once recalled a scene that stayed with her long after filming had ended.

Rollins had to play a detective informing a mother that he had shot and killed her son. It was a television drama scene, written and staged for the cameras. But the emotional weight of the moment affected Rollins deeply.

"Something in the scene really touched Howard," Johnson recalled. "He just broke down."

She described him as "a sensitive artist" and "a tortured soul".

Those words capture something important about Howard Rollins: he was an exceptionally talented actor whose performances could carry enormous emotional weight, while his personal struggles with substance use had a profound effect on his life and career.

Rollins died on 8 December 1996 at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. He was 46. Contemporary reports described his death as complications from lymphoma, while later biographical accounts reported that he had been diagnosed with AIDS approximately six weeks before his death.

Born in Baltimore, Drawn to the Stage

Howard Ellsworth Rollins Jr. was born on 17 October 1950 in Baltimore, Maryland, the youngest of four children born to Howard Rollins Sr., a steelworker, and Ruth Rollins, a domestic worker.

He grew up in a working-class Baltimore family and developed an interest in acting while still young. He attended Towson State College in Maryland, now Towson University, where he studied theatre.

His first significant acting opportunity came after a friend encouraged him to audition for a production of Of Mice and Men at a local Baltimore theatre. The experience helped convince him that acting could become his profession.

Image source: The Movie Database (TMDB)

In 1970, Rollins left college to take a role in the PBS production Our Street. He moved to New York City in 1974 and began establishing himself in theatre and television.

His Broadway credits included We Interrupt This Program in 1975, The Mighty Gents in 1978, and G.R. Point in 1979.

He also received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Daytime Drama Series for his work on the NBC soap opera Another World.

The stage and daytime television gave Rollins the experience he needed. His breakthrough in film was just around the corner.

Ragtime and the Oscar Nomination

In 1981, Howard Rollins was cast as Coalhouse Walker Jr. in Ragtime, Miloš Forman's film adaptation of E.L. Doctorow's novel.

Coalhouse Walker is a gifted Black piano player whose life is transformed by racial injustice. After suffering a series of devastating injustices, he responds with escalating resistance and violence.

The role required Rollins to portray dignity, anger, vulnerability and determination within the same character.

His performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He also received a Golden Globe nomination for the role.

Rollins was 31 years old and had established himself as one of the most promising young actors of his generation.

He followed Ragtime with another major film role in A Soldier's Story in 1984, Norman Jewison's adaptation of Charles Fuller's Pulitzer Prize-winning play.

Rollins played Captain Davenport, a Black Army lawyer investigating the murder of a Black soldier at a segregated military base in Louisiana.

The film was critically acclaimed, and Rollins once again demonstrated the quiet authority and emotional precision that had become hallmarks of his performances.

In the Heat of the Night

In 1988, Howard Rollins was cast as Detective Virgil Tibbs in the television drama In the Heat of the Night, taking over the character previously played by Sidney Poitier in the 1967 film.

Rollins starred opposite Carroll O'Connor, who played Sparta, Mississippi, police chief Bill Gillespie.

Virgil Tibbs was an intelligent and highly capable Black detective from Philadelphia working in the racially charged environment of the American South. Rollins brought dignity, restraint, and intensity to the role.

The series became a major television success, and Rollins remained part of the main cast for five seasons.

Behind the scenes, however, his struggles with substance use were becoming increasingly difficult to manage.

Rollins faced problems involving cocaine and alcohol, as well as legal consequences connected to his substance use. In 1988, he pleaded guilty to cocaine possession in Louisiana. He was later arrested on multiple occasions for driving under the influence.

In 1993, he spent time in jail following legal problems involving reckless driving and DUI.

His substance-use problems eventually affected his position on In the Heat of the Night, although he later returned to acting in other television and film projects.

Carroll O'Connor, who had personal experience with the devastating effects of addiction within his own family, spoke with compassion about Rollins's struggles.

"Howard has a problem," O'Connor said. "But it's a problem that 1 in 3 Americans face. There isn't a family that doesn't face this in some way."

The Comeback That Almost Was

After leaving In the Heat of the Night, Rollins worked to rebuild his life and career.

He underwent drug rehabilitation and participated in support programmes as he worked towards sobriety.

He continued acting, appearing in projects including New York Undercover and the film Drunks in 1995. He also appeared in Remember WENN in 1996.

These roles represented a return to professional work after several difficult years.

His final acting work included the 1996 television movie Harambee!. By this point, Rollins had begun rebuilding a career that had been severely disrupted by substance-use problems.

Then, in the autumn of 1996, he was diagnosed with AIDS.

Approximately six weeks later, he died.

A Death Reported as Lymphoma

On 8 December 1996, Howard Rollins died at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. He was 46 years old.

Contemporary reports described his death as complications from lymphoma. Later biographical accounts reported that Rollins had been diagnosed with AIDS approximately six weeks before his death.

The AIDS diagnosis therefore came very late in his life, during a period when AIDS-related stigma remained widespread and public understanding of HIV was very different from today.

Rollins's funeral was held in Baltimore on 13 December 1996, and he was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in his native city.

Carroll O'Connor expressed his grief after Rollins's death, describing him as a friend whom he and others had loved dearly.

The Untold Story: How systemic stigma shaped the legacy and final chapters of a Hollywood icon

What Howard Rollins Left Behind

Howard Rollins left behind a body of work that remains significant in American film and television.

His performance as Coalhouse Walker Jr. in Ragtime earned him an Academy Award nomination and established him as one of the most promising actors of his generation.

His portrayal of Captain Davenport in A Soldier's Story demonstrated his ability to bring intelligence and authority to complex dramatic roles.

As Virgil Tibbs in In the Heat of the Night, he brought a dignified and nuanced Black character to millions of television viewers.

His career was disrupted by addiction and the legal consequences that followed, but his later work showed that he continued trying to rebuild his professional life.

His final years also coincided with the AIDS epidemic, when HIV-related stigma could make conversations about diagnosis, illness, and death particularly difficult.

Howard Rollins's story is therefore about more than the circumstances of his death. It is also the story of an exceptionally gifted actor, a complicated personal struggle, and a career whose potential was never fully realised.

He was a sensitive artist. He was a powerful performer. And although his life ended far too soon, the work he left behind continues to be remembered.
